What is a COB LED strip light?

A COB (chip-on-board) LED strip is a flexible tape where bare LED dies are bonded straight onto the FPCB and covered by one continuous phosphor layer, so the strip emits a solid line of light with no visible dots. DENO builds COB tape from 360 to 840 LEDs/m on 4.5 mm to 12 mm boards, at 5V, 12V, 24V and 48V, with a 180° beam angle and CRI up to 98.

Why does a COB LED strip have no dots or dark spots?

Because the phosphor layer is continuous, not per-package. On an SMD tape each 2835 or 5050 package is a separate point source, so a diffuser 10–20 mm away still shows dots; on a chip-on-board strip the dies sit under one shared phosphor sheet, so the emitting surface itself is the diffuser and the line stays uniform even in a shallow profile with a clear lens.

Is a COB LED strip better than an SMD LED strip?

For uniformity, yes; for raw output and long runs, not always. A COB LED strip wins wherever the light source is visible or sits close to a diffuser — cove, joinery, shelves, handrails — because it is completely dot-free at 180°. High-power SMD boards still lead above roughly 12W/m, which is where most COB tape stops. If you need dot-free light AND high power, the SOB generation carries the same seamless line to 24W/m.

What is the maximum power per metre of a COB LED strip?

Most COB LED strip tops out around 12W/m. Above that the shared phosphor and the thin copper run hot enough to shift colour and shorten life, so DENO specifies standard COB between 4W/m and 12W/m. Projects needing 15–24W/m of dot-free output move to the SOB flip-chip build on 105 µm copper, which holds CRI 95 at double the wattage.

How do you solve voltage drop on a long COB LED strip run?

Raise the voltage or feed from both ends. A 24V constant-voltage COB tape visibly fades after about 5 m on a single feed and 10 m fed from both ends; the 48V COB build extends a single feed to roughly 10–12 m. Beyond that, constant-current SOB boards hold rated brightness for 15 m from one feed and 30 m fed from both ends.

COB LED strip is the reference for seamless, dot-free lines — but the shared phosphor layer caps most builds around 12W/m and a 5 m single feed.
