The reel length on the label is not the run length you can light evenly. What matters is how far the tape can go from one feed before the far end dims — and that depends on voltage, copper weight and feed topology, not on how long the reel is.

Voltage drop: why long runs dim, and the three fixes

Every metre of copper track adds resistance. On a 12 V tape the far end of a 10 m run can sit 20-30 per cent below nominal voltage, which the eye reads as a clear brightness gradient. Long-run tape is engineered around this with heavier copper, higher system voltage and smarter feed points.

Feeding at both ends doubles the usable run because the worst-case point moves from the far end to the middle. On linear constant-current tape, power can also be tapped at any point along the strip, so a mid-run feed at L/2 behaves exactly like both-end feeding. Moving from 1 oz to 2 oz copper halves the track resistance, and 35+70 micron double-layer copper goes further again.

Long outdoor runs fail on three things: water ingress at joints, UV degradation of the jacket, and cable runs nobody planned before the concrete was poured. Covered soffits need IP65 silicone coating; open facades and in-ground work need IP67/IP68 extruded or injected silicone with sealed end caps and potted cable entries.
