LED Strip Power Supply Calculator

Total load is the rated power per metre multiplied by the installed length. The driver is then sized about 20 per cent above that load so it never runs at full output. A 14.4 W/m tape over 5 m draws 72 W and wants a 90 W driver; the same tape over 20 m draws 288 W and is better split into separate feeds.

How the LED Strip Power Supply Calculator works

Total load is the rated power per metre multiplied by the installed length. The driver is then sized about 20 per cent above that load so it never runs at full output. A 14.4 W/m tape over 5 m draws 72 W and wants a 90 W driver; the same tape over 20 m draws 288 W and is better split into separate feeds.

The same module rates luminous efficacy in lm/W from the lm/m and W/m you enter, so a power budget and an efficiency target are checked in one step before a driver is ordered.

  • Connected load = W/m x metres; driver = load x about 1.2.
  • Driver voltage must match the tape exactly (12V, 24V, 36V or 48V).
  • When load or distance outgrows one driver, split circuits at a cut point.

Frequently asked questions

What size power supply do I need for an LED strip?

Multiply power per metre by run length, then add about 20 per cent headroom. A 14.4 W/m tape over 5 m draws 72 W and should be driven by a 90 W supply.

Why should an LED driver not run at 100 per cent load?

A driver held below full output runs cooler and keeps margin for inrush and tolerance, which is why the calculator sizes roughly 20 per cent above the connected load.

Can one driver feed several LED strip runs?

Yes, as long as the combined load stays inside the derated driver capacity and each run is wired back to the driver rather than daisy-chained beyond its voltage-drop limit.
