What makes long lasting LED strip lights actually last?
Lifetime is set by junction temperature and solder-joint fatigue, not by which LED bin appears on the datasheet. Long lasting LED strip lights therefore start with the board: 99.9% pure electroplated copper for low thermal resistance, gold-wire bonding at the die, derated drive current and a mounting substrate that can actually shed the heat. Built that way, DENO architectural boards hold L90 at 50,000 hours and carry a 5-year warranty.
Heat is the whole story
Every 10 °C rise in junction temperature roughly halves useful life, so the thermal path from die to ambient decides the outcome. Heavier, purer copper spreads heat sideways out of the emitter footprint; an aluminium profile carries it away; derating the drive current lowers the heat generated in the first place. A board run at 70% of its maximum current will outlive an identical board run flat out by a wide margin.
The second ageing mechanism is mechanical. Thermal cycling flexes solder joints, and on conventionally jointed reels the section-to-section solder points fatigue first. Continuous roll-to-roll boards remove those joints, which is why they age better on long installations.
How to compare two datasheets honestly
Ask for evidence rather than a lifetime figure:
- LM-80 data for the LED at the actual drive current, not the minimum
- Copper weight and purity, and whether it is plated or laminated
- Stated junction temperature at the quoted W/m, on the intended profile
- L90 versus L70 — L70 flatters a board that has already faded visibly
- Warranty terms in writing, plus CE, UL and RoHS test reports
