LED Strip Engineering Selection Handbook
Compare SOB, roll-to-roll, high-density, wall washer and ultra-long LED strip selection criteria and engineering parameters.
01 / SOB · Continuous optical line
SOB uses individually packaged, gold-wire-bonded LEDs soldered to a flexible circuit under a continuous silicone optical layer. This differs from bare-die COB under a shared phosphor layer.
Selection matrix
| Project condition | Selection direction | Check before specifying |
|---|---|---|
| Shallow profile, visible light line | SOB with a matched diffuser | Profile depth, viewing angle and dot visibility on a sample |
| Colour-critical display | SOB with the required colour-rendering option | Model-specific CRI, binning and CCT |
| Extended continuous installation | SOB-R2R or constant-current SOB where offered | Continuous circuit length, feed layout and powered-run limit |
Parameter comparison
| Parameter | Options or construction | Engineering decision |
|---|---|---|
| Emitter architecture | SOB: packaged LEDs / COB: bare dies | Select by package construction, not visual similarity alone |
| Optical surface | Continuous silicone layer / model-specific diffuser | Confirm appearance in the actual mounting profile |
| Electrical design | Voltage and current method vary by model | Read the product sheet before sizing feeds and drivers |
Packaging type alone does not establish an IP rating, run length, lifetime or performance guarantee.
View products02 / R2R · Continuous circuit
DENO produces SMD-R2R and SOB-R2R strips on continuously electroplated flexible circuits. R2R describes the circuit manufacturing process; it is not a promise that one feed can power an entire reel.
Selection matrix
| Project condition | Selection direction | Check before specifying |
|---|---|---|
| Few accessible splice locations | Continuous R2R circuit | Specified unspliced circuit length and cut points |
| Long run with uniform appearance | R2R circuit with a suitable feed or constant-current design | Voltage drop, actual load and far-end output |
| SOB optical line plus continuous circuit | SOB-R2R variant | Both packaging and circuit construction on the selected model |
Parameter comparison
| Parameter | Options or construction | Engineering decision |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit fabrication | Continuous electroplated web / joined die-cut panels | Check intermediate splice count within the ordered length |
| Copper construction | 35 µm base + 70 µm electroplated = 105 µm on specified builds | Confirm the copper build of the actual model |
| Run planning | Circuit length / powered run / supplied reel length | Treat these as three separate specifications |
Continuous circuit length, powered-run length and reel length are different values. Do not infer one from another.
View products03 / High density · Pitch and diffusion
High-density strips reduce the spacing between packaged LEDs. Visible dotting depends on LED pitch, diffuser depth, diffuser transmittance and beam angle together.
Selection matrix
| Project condition | Selection direction | Check before specifying |
|---|---|---|
| Close-viewed joinery | Shorter-pitch model with a matched diffuser | Mock-up at the intended viewing distance |
| Shallow aluminium channel | Compare high-density SMD with a continuous-line option | Channel depth, diffuser type and installed appearance |
| Colour-sensitive display | High-density model with specified rendering and binning | Product-specific CRI, CCT and binning |
Parameter comparison
| Parameter | Options or construction | Engineering decision |
|---|---|---|
| LED pitch | Shorter / longer spacing | Compare the actual LED/m and pitch of candidate models |
| Profile depth | Shallow / deeper cavity | Check overlap at the actual diffuser distance |
| Diffuser | Higher / lower transmittance | Balance dot control against delivered light |
LED density alone never guarantees a dot-free installation; test the specified profile and diffuser together.
View products04 / Wall washer · Beam and setback
Flexible wall washers use secondary optics to direct light across an architectural surface. Grazing and washing require different beam shapes and mounting geometry.
Selection matrix
| Project condition | Selection direction | Check before specifying |
|---|---|---|
| Reveal surface texture | Narrow-beam grazing arrangement | Setback, aiming, surface finish and mock-up |
| Evenly light a wall | Wider or asymmetric washing arrangement | Beam angle, setback and illumination uniformity |
| Outdoor or wet location | Model and sealing selected for the exposure | Exact model IP rating, end seals and site water exposure |
Parameter comparison
| Parameter | Options or construction | Engineering decision |
|---|---|---|
| Optical task | Grazing / washing | Choose texture emphasis or even vertical illumination first |
| Lens | 15° / 30° / 60° options on applicable models | Confirm model availability and photometry before specifying |
| Ingress exposure | IP65 water jets / IP67 temporary immersion | One rating does not automatically establish the other |
Beam uniformity depends on lens, mounting distance and surface. IP ratings are model- and installation-specific.
View products05 / Ultra-long · Power distribution
Long-run strip selection separates circuit construction from power distribution. Per-segment linear constant-current designs can help regulate output within their specified electrical limits.
Selection matrix
| Project condition | Selection direction | Check before specifying |
|---|---|---|
| Feed available at one end | Check a model rated for the required single-end run | W/m, voltage drop and far-end brightness |
| Feeds available at both ends | Compare both-end feeding with single-end feeding | Driver capacity and effective feed distance |
| Concealed middle access | Mid-strip tap where permitted by the model | Segment wiring, polarity and actual installation layout |
Parameter comparison
| Parameter | Options or construction | Engineering decision |
|---|---|---|
| Control method | Constant voltage / per-segment constant current | Confirm driver and strip compatibility |
| Feed position | Single end / both ends / mid-strip tap | Both-end or central feed can reduce farthest feed distance to L/2 |
| Supply | 24 V / 36 V / 48 V on applicable models | Verify selected model, load and driver before sizing the run |
No universal maximum powered length: determine it for the selected model, voltage, load and feed topology.
