Where are high quality full spectrum LED strip lights actually worth the money?
High quality LED strip lights at Ra 95+ pay for themselves wherever colour judgement is part of the work or part of the sale: galleries and museums, jewellery, fashion and cosmetics retail, photo, video and grading suites, dental and dermatology rooms, and premium interiors full of timber, stone and skin tones. Everywhere else — long coves, car parks, warehouses, anything driven by connected load — a blue-pump Ra 90 board at 130-150 lm/W is the more sensible specification.
Application notes by sector
The common factor is that a colour decision is being made under the light — by a curator, a customer, a clinician or a colourist. That is where the extra watts buy something measurable.
- Museums and archives: Ra 95+, UV-A below 2 µW/lm, dimmed display cases at 50–150 lux
- Fashion and jewellery: R9 > 90 so reds and gemstone saturation survive the display case
- Food halls and butchery: continuous red tail keeps produce looking fresh without pink filters
- Clinical and dental: skin-tone indices R13/R15 reported alongside Ra
- Studios and grading suites: TM-30 Rf 93 plus SVM below 0.4 for flicker-free capture
- Premium residential: timber, stone and textile tones under cove and joinery lighting
Where to specify something else
Warehouses, car parks, plant rooms, service corridors and most back-of-house areas are lit to a lux target, not a colour target. Specifying Ra 95 there adds 30–40% to connected load and pushes the ErP energy class down for no visible benefit. Use a high-efficacy blue-pump board in those zones and reserve continuous-spectrum tape for the public and colour-critical areas of the same project.
