Silicone Injection-Moulded IP67 LED Strip Solutions
By DENO LED Lighting ·
How silicone injection moulding produces IP67 LED strips that stay flexible, resist yellowing and survive outdoors far longer than glue-filled tubing.
At Denolighting, we are committed to continuous refinement of product details. This update focuses on the development and evolution of our injection-moulded edgeless end cap technology. Through ongoing improvements in materials, structure, and manufacturing processes, we have optimized product appearance, protection performance, and compatibility across multiple installation systems. The edgeless end cap not only enhances waterproof performance and overall aesthetics but also ensures smooth light transition at the strip ends after connection — with no bulging or visual disruption. Especially when integrated with aluminum profiles, it solves common issues like lifting or misalignment found in traditional end caps, significantly improving installation efficiency and engineering quality. Injection molding through dies ensures structural consistency and mass production efficiency Seamless: No opaque plugs at joints; light flows seamlessly to prevent interruptions. Sleek and Durable: A metal compression ring secures the cable exit, achieving IP67 waterproofing and a cleaner, more consistent finish. Cable direction The edgeless injection-moulded end cap is well-suited for a variety of lighting applications, including architectural outlines, landscape illumination, commercial facades, and signage systems. With outstanding waterproof performance, installation compatibility, and seamless light continuity, it is the ideal choice for high-spec lighting projects in demanding environments.
Why injection moulding beats glue-filled tube
The cheapest way to make a waterproof LED strip is to slide the board into a PVC tube and pump glue into both ends. It passes an initial spray test and then fails slowly: the glue shrinks, the tube yellows under UV, moisture migrates along the cable entry and condensation collects inside the sleeve. Silicone injection moulding forms the body around the strip in a heated mould, so the silicone bonds to the board surface and there is no air gap for water to occupy.
What IP67 means in practice
IP67 means complete dust ingress protection and protection against temporary immersion in water to one metre for thirty minutes. That covers rain, wash-down, splash zones, planting beds and most facade details. It does not cover permanent submersion - for fountains, pool coves and continuously wet trenches, specify the IP68 extruded construction instead.
Material behaviour that matters outdoors
Silicone holds its elasticity from roughly -40 C to +200 C and does not embrittle under UV, which is the failure mode that ends the life of most PVC-sleeved products within two or three summers. It also stays optically stable, so a frosted silicone body diffusing a high-density board keeps its transmittance instead of drifting yellow and dragging the colour point with it. For projects with a five-year or ten-year warranty requirement, this is the deciding property.
Construction details to check
Inspect the end caps: a proper solution moulds or bonds a matching silicone cap rather than plugging the end with a blob of adhesive. Inspect the cable exit, which should be over-moulded so that pulling the lead does not break the seal. Inspect the wall thickness above the LEDs, which sets both the diffusion quality and the mechanical protection. Finally, check the minimum bend radius; over-tight bends are the most common cause of field failures on moulded product.
Dot-free output through a moulded body
Waterproofing and appearance are linked. Visible hot spots depend on LED pitch, the depth between the emitter and the outer surface, the transmittance of the silicone and the beam angle of the emitter. Increasing pitch density and adding diffusion depth removes dots but costs lumens, so the four variables have to be balanced per project. DENO tunes them per family rather than applying one recipe to everything.
Where to use IP67 moulded strip
Architectural facades, canopy and soffit lighting, landscape and planter details, covered walkways, bathroom and spa coves, cold rooms and food-service areas that are cleaned with a hose. In each of these the fixture is exposed to water but not sitting in it, which is exactly the duty IP67 was written for.
FAQ
Can IP67 moulded strip be cut on site? Only at marked cut units, and the cut end must be resealed with a proper end-cap kit or the rating is void.
Does the silicone body affect brightness? A frosted body costs a small amount of transmittance in exchange for a dot-free line; clear bodies preserve output where diffusion is handled by an extrusion.
What is the expected outdoor life? With silicone construction and correctly sized drivers, DENO rates these families for long-term outdoor service rather than seasonal use.
Choosing between IP20, IP65, IP67 and IP68
IP20 is an open board for dry interiors. IP65 adds a coated or sleeved surface that resists low-pressure jets and suits sheltered exteriors. IP67 is the moulded silicone body described above and covers rain, splash and temporary immersion. IP68 is the extruded construction for continuous immersion. Choosing one grade too low is the most expensive decision in an outdoor project, because the replacement cost is access and downtime rather than material.
Driver, cable and commissioning
A waterproof strip fed by a non-rated driver is not a waterproof system. Use an IP-rated driver in an accessible enclosure, seal every cable gland, and size conductors for the voltage drop over the full run rather than the nominal metre figure. Where a run is long, feed from both ends or mid-feed to halve the effective distance. Test the whole circuit before the joinery or the facade panel closes over it.
