Dot-Free LED Strip Guide: How to Eliminate LED Spotting

Learn how to achieve seamless linear lighting with a dot-free LED strip, utilizing SOB technology and 105μm copper FPCBs to eliminate spotting.

A dot-free LED strip is a high-density linear lighting solution engineered to eliminate visible "spotting" or "pixellation" through the use of Chip-on-Board (COB) or Surface-mount On Board (SOB) technology. By mounting LED chips directly onto a flexible substrate with minimal spacing and covering them with a continuous phosphor layer, these strips produce a seamless line of light without the need for deep diffusion profiles or high-density polycarbonate covers. The Physics of LED Spotting: Why Dots Occur In traditional SMD (Surface Mounted Device) LED strips, spotting is a function of the pitch—the distance between the centers of two adjacent LED chips. When this pitch is too wide relative to the distance between the LEDs and the diffuser (the "Z-height"), the human eye perceives individual points of intensity rather than a uniform glow. To achieve a dot-free effect with standard SMD strips, designers often require a diffuser-to-LED ratio of at least 1:1, which increases the physical footprint of the lighting fixture. SOB vs. COB: Engineering the No-Spot LED Strip While COB (Chip on Board) has been the industry standard for seamless lighting, SOB LED strip technology represents a significant evolution in thermal management and structural integrity. At DENO, our SOB (Surface-mount On Board) process utilizes advanced led-chip-technology where 99.99% gold wire bonding connects the diode to the circuit, ensuring superior electrical conductivity and resistance to thermal expansion stress. The elimination of dots in SOB strips is achieved through a 180-degree beam angle and a high-refractive-index silicone encapsulant. This differs from traditional 120-degree SMD chips which require significant overlap to mask the dark spots between diodes. Comparison: Traditional SMD vs. SOB LED Strip Feature Traditional SMD (2835) SOB LED Strip LED Pitch 8mm - 15mm < 2mm Luminous Uniformity Visible spotting without deep diffusers 100% Dot-free at zero distance Beam Angle 120° 180° Thermal Substrate 35μm - 70μm Copper 105μm Electroplated Copper Color Consistency 3-Step or 5-Step SDCM < 3-Step SDCM (Standard) Overcoming Voltage Drop and Thermal Resistance One of the primary challenges with high-density no spot led strip configurations is the increased current draw and subsequent heat generation. To mitigate this, DENO utilizes a 105μm thick electroplated copper layer on a Roll-to-Roll (R2R) FPCB. Traditional FPCBs often use 35μm copper, which leads to a significant voltage drop over 5-meter runs, resulting in a visible brightness decay at the end of the strip. The formula for calculating voltage drop in these systems is V_drop = I × (R × L) , where R is the resistance per meter. By increasing the copper cross-section to 105μm via r2r-technology , we reduce the resistance (R), allowing for longer seamless runs without luminosity loss. Furthermore, the 99.99% gold wire bonding within our SOB chips ensures that junction temperatures remain within the optimal range, preventing the yellowing of the phosphor layer that often plagues low-quality dot-free strips. Application and Integration for Lighting Designers For architectural and interior designers, achieving a dot-free aesthetic requires selecting the right combination of CRI (Color Rendering Index) and SDCM (Standard Deviation Colour Matching). Our SOB series offers CRI >90 and R9 >50 as standard, ensuring that while the light is seamless, it also accurately renders textures and skin tones. Recessed Profiles: SOB strips enable the use of ultra-slim aluminum profiles (less than 10mm deep) while maintaining a perfectly uniform line of light. Reflective Surfaces: When lighting polished marble or stainless steel, traditional LEDs create distracting specular reflections. A dot-free strip eliminates these "mirror dots." Cove Lighting: The 180-degree emission of SOB technology ensures that the transition from the wall to the ceiling is smooth, without the "scalloping" effect common in low-density strips. Reliability and IP Ratings Density should not compromise durability. Our dot-free led strip solutions are available in various ingress protection ratings, ranging from IP20 for dry indoor applications to IP67/IP68 using silicone extrusion. Unlike inferior versions that use PVC, our silicone extrusion process maintains high transmittance and does not crack or yellow under UV exposure. This is critical for maintaining the "no spot" visual over the product's 50,000-hour rated lifespan. When selecting a dot-free solution, engineers must also consider the MacAdam Ellipse. We guarantee < 3-step SDCM, ensuring that if you purchase strips for the first floor and third floor of a project, the chromaticity coordinates (x, y) remain identical to the naked eye. For high-end residential and commercial projects requiring professional-grade linear illumination, the SOB LED strip provides the optimal balance of lumen density, thermal management, and visual seamlessness. By leveraging 105μm copper FPCBs and gold-wire bonded chips, DENO ensures that "dot-free" means more than just a visual effect—it means long-term performance reliability.
