Are the brightest LED strip lights available waterproof for outdoor use?
Yes. Every wide high-output board is available as waterproof outdoor LED strip lights — IP65 silicone coated, IP67 sleeved or IP68 fully potted — plus DENO WAP conformal coating that stays clear instead of yellowing under UV. Sealing traps heat, so bright outdoor builds use 2-3 oz copper and are specified one drive step below the identical indoor board. On coastal sites, add marine-grade specification and sealed UV-stable end caps, where most real failures start.
Choosing the right ingress class
IP65 silicone coating handles splash, rain and washdown while staying flexible and slim — the usual choice for covered facades and bathrooms. IP67 sleeving adds an extruded tube for temporary immersion and mechanical protection. IP68 potting fills the channel completely for permanent immersion, at the cost of thickness, weight and bend radius.
The wide boards complicate this: a 64 mm four-row board inside a filled IP68 sleeve is a large thermal blanket over a 45 W/m load. On those builds DENO either drops the drive current or moves the run to a profile-mounted IP65 build with a sealed cover, which usually delivers more usable light on site than a fully potted board running hot.
Outdoor specification checklist
Weather is only half the problem; UV and thermal cycling do the rest.
- WAP conformal coating where long-term optical clarity matters
- 2–3 oz copper on any outdoor build above 20 W/m
- One drive step of derating versus the identical indoor board
- Marine-grade specification for coastal and salt-spray environments
- Sealed, UV-stable end caps and gland entries — most failures start at the cable
