How Bright Should LED Strip Lights Be? Lumens per Metre Guide
By DENO LED Lighting ·
Lumens per metre, not watts, is the number to specify. Target ranges for cove, under-cabinet, retail and task lighting, and how efficacy changes the wattage you need.
Specify brightness in lumens per metre (lm/m), never in watts. Watts tell you what the strip consumes; lumens tell you what it delivers. Two 14.4W/m strips can differ by more than 40% in output depending on LED grade and copper weight.
Target ranges by application
Accent and cove uplighting — 400 to 800 lm/m. Enough to wash a ceiling without creating a visible bright band.
Under-cabinet and shelf lighting — 700 to 1,200 lm/m at close range.
Retail display and joinery — 1,000 to 1,800 lm/m, usually paired with high CRI.
Task, industrial and linear replacement — 1,800 to 3,000+ lm/m from high-efficacy LED strip lights .
Efficacy decides the wattage you need
Efficacy (lm/W) is the conversion rate between the two. At 100 lm/W you need 10W/m for 1,000 lm/m; at 200 lm/W you need only 5W/m. Higher efficacy means less heat, longer life, a smaller driver and a lower running cost for the same light on the surface — which is why it is the first spec to push on any large project.
Do not forget the losses
The datasheet figure is bare-strip output. A frosted diffuser typically absorbs 10% to 20%, and a deep profile shades some of the beam. Specify roughly 20% above your target so the installed result matches the design intent.
Wider strips carry more light
There is a physical ceiling to how much a 8mm FPCB can dissipate. For very high output, a wide LED strip light spreads the LEDs and the heat across more copper. Where the light has to be pushed a distance or held to a narrow beam, a lensed LED strip light concentrates the output instead of raising the wattage.
From lumens to lux
Clients specify lux on a surface, not lumens in a strip. Our illuminance and flux calculator converts between the two for a given mounting height, beam angle and room reflectance — so you can size the strip before the mock-up.

Frequently asked questions
How do I determine the appropriate lumen output for a specific LED strip lighting application?
The appropriate lumen output for LED strip lights is determined by the specific application's requirements. For accent or cove lighting, 300-500 lm/m may suffice. Under-cabinet or task lighting often requires 500-1000 lm/m. General ambient lighting can range from 800-1500 lm/m, while high-brightness applications like retail displays or primary task lighting may exceed 1500 lm/m. Consider the illuminated surface's reflectivity and distance from the light source.
Why is lumens per meter (lm/m) a more reliable metric than watts per meter (W/m) for LED strip brightness?
Lumens per meter (lm/m) directly quantifies the light output, making it a more reliable metric for brightness than watts per meter (W/m). Wattage indicates power consumption, not light output. Due to varying LED efficacies (lm/W), two strips with the same W/m can have significantly different lm/m values. Focusing on lm/m ensures the specified light level is achieved, while efficacy informs energy efficiency.
What is the impact of LED strip light efficacy on overall system design and energy consumption?
High efficacy LED strip lights, measured in lumens per watt (lm/W), minimize power consumption for a given lumen output. This reduces operational costs and heat generation, potentially extending product lifespan and simplifying thermal management. Specifying high efficacy LED strip enables compliance with energy efficiency standards and can reduce the required power supply capacity, optimizing overall system design and minimizing energy consumption.
